I once tried to play "Just the Tip"... Didn't work, I had to surrender the whole thing.

That may still be the case, Wayne, but "It ain't over til the fat lady (or man, in my case) sings". Stay tuned (once again).

Great to hear experience with Mudhole was a good one.

I contacted customer service at mudhole.com - unfortunately, they couldn't solve my problem but did take the time to exchange several emails to understand the technical details. Here's the last message from them.

"That is really the down side of purchasing from a company like Rapala.   Those type companies never have extra sections to purchase for instances such as yours.  I can tell you, companies that we deal with, like Lamiglas,  MHX,  Sage, St. Croix, TFO all either have spare sections for their rods or will make a section, if it one of their rods.

I'd deal with them again in a heartbeat.

This issue isn't finished. I've located a fishing gear repair guy who has a bunch of leftover tip sections, one of which may fit. I'll find out tomorrow, stay tuned.

Sorry to hear that, Don. It's astounding how companies can differ on their levels of accountability and customer service.

If you're in the Durham area, Jackie at Sail can fix the rod for you. He can do quite a bit, from building rods to rebuilding a reel. His prices are reasonable too.

I had bad experience with a rod repair there too....I bought a Luhr Jensen rod, Rapala bought the company and had a rod seat issue, it wouldn't fit most reels.
I called, was polite, and the guy told me to bring it down, when I got there he told me he was only interested in what it looked like and they were not going to help me out at all, like I took a trip there for their amusement.  That was 5 years ago and they are still in my bad books, I feel bad every time I see a Rapala product and conflicted every time someone asks me what product they should get.  Thanks for the bad vibes Rapala.

I bet Lebarons can take care of you, there are probably other smaller places in Toronto that will also fix it for you on the spot.

finny.

Maybe so, but the brief conversation never got remotely close to that.

Look, it's only a fishing rod so not a big deal but no-one likes to be treated like that. Anyhow, it's over and done now.

Sorry to hear Don, warranty and companies standing up for their product is mostly how I base my purchases on.
Being a rod a few years out of production it would be tough to get replacement section.

My rod was about 4 or 5 years old so it definitely wasn't a warranty job and I told the woman I was willing to pay for the rod tip but she wasn't having any of that. I got the impression that if I was there I would have gotten the bum's rush for sure. One of the worst customer relations experiences I've ever had.

same happened here with a Fenwick this spring, however in my case, customer service was excellent, sent in a photo of the break, 1 week later new rod at my doorstep.

Rapala customer service (or lack of)

I broke the tip section of a 2-piece Rapala spinning rod last week trying to extract a bait from the heavy cabbage. Not broken at the ferrule but about half way up the tip section. I called Rapala to see if I could buy a new tip section and was told in no uncertain terms that they (in Oshawa) are distributors, have no parts, could suggest no solution for getting a new tip, and I should throw the old butt section out and buy a new rod. Very abrupt. No more Rapala products for me. A good lesson how all of the advertising, promotion, retail show booths, etc. can be undone by one employee with attitude.

Any suggestions where I might find a new tip or is it off to BPF for me?
